Because of its innovative design, the F-16, which is considered by some experts to be the best fighter yet built, it is smaller, faster and cheaper than its counterparts. The F-16 carries only a few bombs or missiles, relying instead on its impressive speed and maneuverability for the defence. In the Vietnam war the USAF discovered that many of the smaller, more maneuverable MiGs outpreformed their larger, bulkier fighters. In 1971, the USAF set a competition up for any company that could build them a smaller fighter that met their expectations. General Dynamics introduced their design, Model 401. Two prototypes flew and one year later, decaired winners. It entered service late in 1978 and two years later was named the Fighting Falcon. Its single Pratt & Whitney F100-P-200 turbofans provides all it's power for it's multi-combat role. It can deliver an assortment of weapons, from air to air, anti-tank, and bombs.
